Historically, Ford has set the standard as a pioneering American automobile manufacturer. As a globally recognized brand, Ford has always prided itself on providing reliable vehicles to drivers everywhere and maintaining a robust American workforce. At a recent Michigan summit titled “ACCELERATE the Essential Economy,” Ford leadership addressed the ongoing hurdles in the U.S. market and shared their vision for overcoming them.
What is “ACCELERATE the Essential Economy”?
Serving as a vital meeting ground, “ACCELERATE the Essential Economy” unites educators, skilled trades professionals, business leaders, and policymakers to deliberate on economic hardships. Held in September 2026, this marked the second gathering in the event's history. Taking place at Michigan Central Station, the location proved just as impactful as the discussions and the ensuing action plan. Restored through the commitment of 3,000 skilled workers, Michigan Central Station now acts as a collaborative center dedicated to resolving America's skilled trades shortage.
Ford was a key participant in this year's conference, joining forces with partner organizations such as The Home Depot, Dycom, and The Wallace Foundation. This united coalition is championing a national public education campaign that will launch in 2027 to inspire young Americans to enter the skilled trades. Backed by research from the Ad Council, the campaign notes that although 38 percent of students are open to a trade career, only 11 percent plan to follow that path after high school. The coalition is determined to overcome the main obstacles of lingering stigmas and limited information.
Ford's Action Plan
Ford and its allies have constructed a detailed roadmap to support young workers in pursuing skilled trades and accessing better career prospects. To begin, Ford Philanthropy is broadening its transportation support initiatives in communities nationwide, working to eliminate travel-related barriers to employment. In addition, Ford Pro is introducing Ford Pro Advantage, the industry's first certified pre-owned program for Class 1-7 commercial vehicles, available through its network of over 700 Commercial Vehicle Centers to make ownership more attainable for entrepreneurs. Lastly, in conjunction with the launch of the Michigan Launchpad for Industrial Innovation & Transformation (Michigan LIFT), Ford Philanthropy and JPMorganChase announced a joint $550,000 contribution to Focus: HOPE, a Detroit-based organization focused on education and workforce training.
