Arriving soon in Ford showrooms, the all-new Transit's 15-passenger wagon configuration offers a groundbreaking safety feature in the form of an industry-first five-row side-curtain airbag. The new airbag was developed in partnership with TRW Automotive, a leading safety system manufacturer.
Norbert Kagerer, vice president, Occupant Safety Systems Engineering for TRW Automotive explained, "The stringent customer and industry regulatory requirements for airbags called for developing a system that provides appropriate occupant protection in a smart package." And smart it is - in order to protect all passengers in the event of a side-impact or rollover event, the new Ford Safety Canopy System employs a 15-foot by 3-foot, 120-liter airbag that utilizes two separate inflators. Impact detection sensors trigger the system which inflates in a fraction of a second.
Ford is rolling out the new Transit in a variety of roof heights, wheelbases and body lengths in order to offer van buyers the broadest selection of commercial vehicle options. The extended-length Transit wagon offers seating for up to 15 people and also delivers best-in-class cargo space behind the last row. The new five-row side-curtain airbag will come standard on the new Transit wagon, in conjunction with a host of other safety inclusions.
