The Different Engine Oil Types
With so many different varieties of motor oils on the market, it can be a confusing choice to make for many who wish to find the best type of oil for their vehicle. There are conventional, full synthetic, and synthetic blends of oil and those specifically made for high mileage vehicles. The factors to consider when choosing the right type of motor oil include the temperature of where the car is driven, the age or mileage of the vehicle, and the way it's driven. Our certified technicians can happily assist you in making the best choice.
Conventional
Conventional motor oil is the cheapest and most commonly used oil available. It's most appropriate for light-duty vehicles that rarely see long distances, and especially for those in areas with temperatures that don't fluctuate much throughout the year. It's produced in factories by refining crude oil, similar to how gasoline and diesel fuel is produced.
Full Synthetic
Full synthetic, unlike conventional oil, is entirely created in a lab or factory. Because it doesn't rely on the deep earth's crude oil, it is a much more refined product. This means that it has a high resistance to oil sludge and lasts longer between oil changes but at a higher cost than conventional motor oil.
Full synthetic provides great benefits for many engines, such as improved lubrication, resistance to oxidation, and protection against thermal breakdown of internal components. It's especially beneficial to those who live in areas of extreme temperatures due to thermal adaptability. A switch to full synthetic is safe for any motor that runs conventional oil, and you may experience a noticeable improvement in performance and gas mileage.
Synthetic Blend
Synthetic blends of motor oil are mixtures of conventional oil, synthetic oil, and additives that can provide much of the same benefits of full synthetic oil and a more affordable cost, such as an improvement in oxidation resistance. It lasts longer than conventional oil between oil changes, but not quite as long as full synthetic.
High Mileage
High mileage motor oils are recommended for vehicles with over 75,000 miles on the engine. It's available in the conventional, synthetic blend, or full synthetic. It includes additives that help reduce oil consumption and emissions, such as a seal conditioner to help minimize internal leaks.
